A Stranger and a Shirt

So the most amazing thing happened today. I work at Walmart, the one place that not a lot of kindness is shown. The busy place to come in and out as a weekly, or sometimes daily, routine. It’s all hustle and bustle. Except when, miraculously, you come across a bit of kindness amongst your busy day.

Don’t get me wrongr, as an employee, kindness is required. A smile is required, at all times. Even the worst of times. But for the customers? It’s not so much of a burden, but rather a choice. A choice to make the worker’s day. To be that needed smile to brighten the day of someone who’s spending all day in that very building. And it’s amazing. Because as rare as those people are, their appearance is ten times more memorable. Even for small occasions.

A lady came through my line today. She bought a whole bunch of cute shirts, but I really liked one. The one with blue and white stripes. I made a comment about how cute it was, and we started talking about size and price and bargains. And I thought the lady went to get the shirt for me to pay for it when I get off. Or I pay her back…. She left after paying and came back with the shirt…. Paid for it. The whole time I’m saying “are you sure ma’am? Are you sure?”.  And then she left saying “happy birthday”. Not my birthday. At all.

This stranger, who’s never met me before today, paid $5 for a shirt to give to me. Five dollars! A stranger spent money on me! I can’t believe it. Such a small amount of money, yet it’s so unbelievable.

It’s amazing. That there are kind souls such as that lady. I aspire to be like that. I may not have the money, but in some way, to reach out to other people and make their day. Anyways, I wanted to share my experience. Maybe it will inspire someone else to do the same.

Till next time.

  1. It really is amazing how far a little kindness can go, isn’t it? By the way, the shirt looks great on you.

I understand what you are saying concerning people not being friendly and such in retail. I’ve seen people be down right rude and I have a theory that they have to take crap at their jobs and thus now, they are the boss and want to dish it out. If you don’t like being treated in that manner, then don’t treat others that way.

I’m glad the experience made for a good day for you.
